Gavin Macdonald Dies in Ho Chi Minh City After Months of Efforts to Return Home From Vietnam
Gavin Macdonald was found deceased in a hotel room in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on 25 September 2026 after months of trying to return home.
Gavin had travelled to Vietnam in mid-May for a four-week holiday, planning to spend two weeks in Ho Chi Minh City before visiting Da Nang and returning to the USA.
Before the planned train journey, Gavin lost a passport, wallet, phone, and other belongings, then spent eight days seeking assistance while facing a language barrier.
With help, Gavin reached the British Consulate and received an emergency British passport on 17 June.
Gavin remained unable to secure the required exit visa despite contacting local authorities, the British Consulate, an ambassador in Hanoi, and the American Embassy.
An appointment on 22 September offered hope, but officials advised Gavin to try again the following month.
After contact ceased on 23 September, authorities later confirmed that Gavin had died, and the family received notification on 9 October.
The official report listed the cause of death as unknown.
Gavin will be remembered with enduring love as family members work to bring Gavin home for a dignified farewell.
