Dennis West Died of Natural Causes in Lauderhill Home Before Officer Allegedly Assumed Control of Property and Used Their Identity
Dennis West was found deceased from natural causes on July 11, 2022, at their home at 4551 N.W. 12th St. in Lauderhill, Florida.
Officers discovered West during a welfare check, and authorities later identified their lawful heirs.
Investigators allege that Lauderhill police officer Brian Louis Sguros, 35, subsequently used West’s identity to pay property taxes and utility bills, seek a repair permit, and claim possession of the home from August 2022.
The property investigation continued into 2025, with a complaint received on May 27 and Sguros placed on paid administrative leave on July 22.
Authorities arrested Sguros on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, after a joint investigation by the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office.
West’s death and the allegations concerning their home remain separate matters, and the official inquiry remains active.
